On Friday July 20, 2018, a Chicagoland worker was impaled in the thigh by a piece of rebar that was being used as wall reinforcement. The worker’s colleagues cut him down and he was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The rebar that impaled the worker’s thigh was 3/4 of an inch.
Rebar, conduit and other protruding metals should always be protected on the jobsite. Taping a flag to the hazard, spray painting it safety orange, or putting a cone over it does NOT act as proper protection against these hazards. The hazards are still present with these methods, and could still cause injury.
Rebar should always be protected by OSHA approved rebar caps.
Mushroom caps are ineffective against impalement hazards, and should only be used on horizontal rebar
For conduit, there isn’t only one way to truly eliminate the conduit stub-up. Stub-EASE™ eliminates conduit stub-ups by embedding a coupling accessible via a pocket created by a plastic sleeve penetrating the concrete slab. Stub-EASE™ eliminates trips and falls due to conduit stub-ups and also eliminates damage to the conduit. After the concrete pour, the Stub-EASE™ is cut flush to the ground, leaving your floor completely flat. When ready, Stub-EASE™ is then extracted using a paddle bit, corresponding the correct size of Stub-EASE™, leaving an opening to install your next piece of conduit
